PARENT HANDBOOK

About Building Blocks

The following handbook should answer most of your questions regarding the policies and programs that make Building Blocks a part of your family.  We want you to be happy with your decision to choose Building Blocks, so if you have any questions not covered in this handbook, please do not hesitate to ask your Center Director.

There are several forms included in this packet that we need returned to us before your child begins at Building Blocks.

§          Program and Policy Acceptance Form

§          Immunization Record

§          Medical Examination Report (Infant/Toddler & Preschool)

§          Health Report for School-Age Child

§          Child Enrollment Form

Our Purpose

Our purpose is to provide you quality childcare with social, emotional, cognitive and physical growth as our building blocks to develop a solid foundation for your child’s future. Building Blocks Child Care & Pre-School is a developmental program which emphasizes the “whole child” approach for early childhood education.  This program encourages self help, self-concept and fine and gross motor skills.

Our Curriculum

Building Blocks uses the ‘Pinnacle Curriculum’.  It is based on the works of experts in the field of child development.  This curriculum provides a research-based educational foundation for the children in our center.  Children will delight in fun, interactive activities that are available to them – they will develop a love for learning while they are growing, playing and having fun.

Enrollment

In order to enroll or be placed on the waiting list, a $25 non-refundable registration fee is required per child.  Parents may enroll their children on a full-time or part-time basis (with the exception of the infant and toddler section, which only accepts full-time enrollment).  Part-time children must reserve the same days each week.

Payment Policy

Tuition for the current week is due on Monday.  After close of business on Friday, a $20 late charge will be added to the current tuition due.  If tuition is not received, the child will not be admitted into the center the following Monday.  Payment is expected for the days reserved for your child each week regardless of attendance or holidays.  No deductions for absences or holidays are permitted.

Current Fee Policies

In order to provide the kind of care and education you want for your child, we are constantly improving our facilities and resources.  For this reason, tuition fees are reviewed annually and are usually increased in the spring.

Third Party Payment

Parents are responsible for the remainder of the full fee that the third party does not pay.  Third party payment may include; Futures, DFS or anyone assisting with the child care fee.  Prior to payment received from DFS, an estimate for the parent’s portion will be provided by the Director.  The parent is required to pay their estimated portion each week until the DFS check is received, at which time any adjustments will be made.

Annual Insurance Fee

There is an annual fee of $25.00 per year per child to help defray the costs of insurance.  This fee is due by January 31st of each year and is non-refundable.  The fee is pro-rated monthly based on when the child enrolls.

Family Discount

For those families requiring child care for 2 or more children, a discount of $10.00 per additional child is deducted from the weekly tuition.

Returned Checks

A fee of $25.00 will be charged for a returned check.  Method of future payments will be at the discretion of the Building Blocks Director.

Change of Schedule

Any change in the days you reserve for your child must be accompanied by a written notice two weeks prior to the change.  This policy also applies to withdrawing your child from the center.  If notice is not given prior to withdrawal, the amount equal to two week’s tuition will be charged to your account.

Signing In and Signing Out Children

When bringing your child in each morning to Building Blocks, we require that you, the parent, sign in on our Time Clock.  Also, you must personally take your child to the teacher in the classroom.  We will release your child only to parents or guardians with legal custody or persons over the age of 18 who are designated by you on the Emergency Contact and Child Enrollment Form.  Every time  someone brings in a child or picks a child up, he or she must clock in/out.  Adults other than parents will be required to show proper ID.  To ensure that Building Blocks is in compliance with any court orders pertaining to the custody of your child, we require a certified copy of a custody order.  We keep this information confidential and solely for the safety and well-being of your child.  If a new custody order is issued or if a restraining order has been issued against either parent, we will also need this information on file.  It is Building Blocks policy to remain neutral in all custody matters and the center may not serve as a visitation site.

Late Pickup Charges

A late fee will be charged for parents arriving after 6:00pm.  The late policy charge is as follows:

6:00-6:04                               No Charge

6:05                                        $5.00

6:10                                        $10.00

6:15                                        $20.00

Each additional 5 minutes   $5.00

School-Age Drop-In Care

School-age children are able to attend day care on the days that school is not in session, i.e. snow days, holiday closings, etc.  An additional drop-in fee of $8.00 for grade-school children and $4.00 for kindergarten children will apply.

Vacation

One week (5 days) of vacation will be granted for children enrolled for one year in the center.  These days can be used individually or combined with a 1-week notice given to the Director.

Holidays

The following holidays are the days we are officially closed.  If a holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, it may be observed on Friday or Monday:  New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day (July 4th), Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Friday after Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve at 2:00pm, Christmas Day, New Years Eve at 4:00pm.

Sick Children

Children should not be brought to the center when they are ill.  Illness is defined as;

§          Listlessness, sleepiness, loss of appetite, and/or general discomfort

§          Skin rash or skin disorder that is contagious

§          Inflamed or swollen throat or glands

§          Persistent cough

§          Fever 100 degrees or higher

§          Diarrhea within the past 24 hours

§          Vomiting within the past 24 hours

§          Yellow or greenish mucous running from the nose with weeping or pinkish eyes (excluding allergies)

§          Sore throat or trouble swallowing

§          Difficult or rapid breathing

§          Other disease symptoms in the informed judgement of the Director

Medication

Medication will only be given upon the written order of a physician and the written permission of the parent.  Medication must be in original container and bear the child’s name.  Over-the-counter medications will be administered in accordance with the labeled instructions unless authorized in writing by a licensed physician.

Meals and Snacks

Building Blocks serves breakfast, lunch and snacks.  The meals are well balanced, yet kid-friendly.  A menu is posted for your review.

Birthdays

Birthdays are celebrated during snack time.  We welcome any commercially prepared treat you would like to provide, but we ask you to please send enough treats for every child in your child’s classroom.  Please DO NOT BRING HOMEMADE TREATS.  Please discuss and schedule your plans with the child’s teacher.

Toys from Home

Except for on “Show and Tell” days, we ask that you leave your child’s toys at home.  We cannot be responsible for lost or damaged items.  If your child has a favorite blanket or sleep item, go ahead and send it with your child’s name on it.  We ask that you wash it every week.

Clothing

Because you never know what can happen, please bring a change of clothes with your child’s name on it.  Children will be permitted to play outside daily except in inclement weather (rain, storms, extremely hot or extremely cold weather).  To avoid losing jackets, hats or gloves, remember to label clothing that might be taken on or off during the day.

Behavior Issues

Because our learning takes place in a group setting, we must be concerned for the welfare and safety of all of our children and staff.  When a particular child’s or parent’s behavior threatens the safety of or becomes abusive towards other children in the center, we may disenroll the child immediately.

Building Blocks reserves the right to adopt new, change existing, and

authorize exceptions to existing policies.
